What Is a Site-Locked PDF?

A site-locked PDF is a PDF file that has been encrypted with our Lock PDF tool. The result looks like a normal PDF (it has a .pdf extension), but it's actually an AES-256 encrypted container with a special PDFE magic header.

This means:

  • Won't open in Adobe Reader, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Preview, or any standard PDF viewer
  • Won't open in mobile PDF apps (iOS Files, Android Google Drive, etc.)
  • Appears "corrupted" or unreadable if you try to open it outside this site
  • Can only be decrypted by this tool, using the correct password

This design gives you absolute privacy even if someone gets the file, they can't open it without the password and without coming to this website. It's the opposite of a standard PDF password (which can be brute-forced or cracked by third-party tools).

Standard PDF Passwords Adobe Acrobat Pro

If your PDF opens in Adobe Reader (with a password prompt), you need Adobe Acrobat Pro to remove the protection: open the PDF with its password → File → Properties → Security → set Security Method to "No Security" → Save. Requires a paid Adobe subscription ($12.99–$24.99/month).

Standard PDF Passwords macOS Preview

On Mac: open the PDF with its password in Preview → File → Export → uncheck "Encrypt" → Save. The result is a PDF without a password. Free, works on any macOS version.

Permissions Passwords (Restrictions Only)

Some PDFs have no "open" password, but restrict printing, copying, or editing. These are called permissions passwords (or owner passwords). You can usually remove them by opening the PDF, then File → Print → Save as PDF. This "prints" the unlocked view into a new unrestricted PDF.

How to Unlock a PDF Without the Password

Most people who search for "unlock PDF without password" fall into one of these categories:

Scenario 1: You Have the File, Don't Know the Password

If the password is a standard PDF password (Adobe/Preview), you need password recovery software. If the file is site-locked by our tool, there's no way to unlock it without the password AES-256 is designed to be uncrackable. That's the whole point of secure encryption.

Scenario 2: You Have the Password But the Tool Won't Unlock

If you know the password but can't unlock, first identify the file type (see "Site-Locked vs Standard" above). If it's a standard PDF, use Adobe/Preview. If it's site-locked, make sure you're entering the exact password (case-sensitive) and using the same file that was locked.

Scenario 3: Permissions Restrictions (Print/Copy Locked)

If the PDF opens fine but you can't print, copy, or edit it, that's a permissions password. Use the "Print to PDF" trick: open the PDF, File → Print → Save as PDF. This creates a new unrestricted copy.

Scenario 4: You're Trying to Bypass DRM

If the PDF has DRM (e.g., purchased ebooks, licensed content), removing it may violate the content license. We don't support DRM circumvention. Contact the content provider for access issues.

Short answer: No, Adobe Reader cannot unlock or remove passwords from PDFs. Adobe Reader (the free version) can only open password-protected PDFs if you enter the correct password. It cannot remove the password or create an unlocked copy.

PDFs protected by Adobe Acrobat, Smallpdf, iLovePDF, or other tools use different encryption methods (standard PDF encryption) and can't be decrypted here. Our tool uses AES-256 decryption in CBC mode. The encrypted file contains a PDFE magic header for detection, along with the salt and IV needed for decryption. The decryption key is derived from your password using PBKDF2 with SHA-256 and 1000 iterations. Once decrypted, the PDF is restored to its original state.

If you enter an incorrect password, the decryption will fail and you'll see an error message. The tool cannot verify passwords before attempting decryption since no password data is stored. You can try again with the correct password. There's no rate limit try as many times as you need.
