How to Remove or Undo Redaction from a PDF

Redaction is meant to be permanent. Once a PDF is properly redacted, the original text is gone you cannot recover it. This is by design and is required for legal compliance.

However, there are cases where you think you've redacted a PDF but the text is still recoverable:

  • Black rectangle over text a simple annotation or drawing on top of text. Text is still there and selectable. Fix: use our free tool for true redaction.

  • White text over black box the text color is white but the character data is still there.
